Acting in a sole-charge environment, the Ops Centre Supervisor is responsible for ensuring Contact’s Generation assets are offered, dispatched, monitored, and scheduled to optimise fuel resources, maintain compliance, maximise revenue opportunities and minimise risk in real-time.

Job Description

Kōrero mō te tūranga | About the role

As an Operations Centre Supervisor, you’ll be the steady hand ensuring Contact’s generation assets are offered, dispatched, monitored, and scheduled for optimal performance.

You’ll use real-time systems to keep everything running safely and efficiently, adapting to changing conditions and making decisions that maximise value and minimise risk.

You’ll:

  • Operate Contact’s generation assets safely using real-time SCADA and other systems.
  • Schedule and dispatch assets within hydrological and legislative constraints, optimising fuel efficiency and plant capability.
  • Analyse market and environmental behaviour to spot opportunities for improvement and financial gain.
  • Support and coach your team, helping others reach their full potential.
  • Work closely with key team members to proactively manage issues and support Contact’s strategy.
  • Monitor environmental and plant conditions, ensuring compliance with the Resource Management Act (RMA) and other regulations.
  • Lead by example in health and safety, creating a safe environment for everyone.

What You’ll Bring

Must-haves:

  • A great attitude, with commercial nous and clever thinking to help us identify opportunities to create value in the ever-changing New Zealand Electricity Markets. 
  • The ability to clearly convey complex issues to a diverse audience (including those of us who are not technically minded). 
  • An understanding of how to deal with complexities and ambiguity, and a sense of urgency when managing issues but without compromising quality. 
  • Proven analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team during 12-hour shifts on a rotating roster.

Nice-to-haves:

  • A relevant technical qualification (Technician/NZCE Level Engineering – Mechanical/Electrical, National Certificate Power Systems Control Level 4, or New Zealand recognised equivalent).
  • Experience in the electricity industry, or in a control room, continuous process, or trading environment.
  • Practical understanding of power generation or heavy machinery.
  • Awareness of the RMA and its role in compliance.
  • Experience building and managing diverse technical teams.
  • Strong business acumen and commercial awareness.
  • Experience coaching, mentoring, and developing others.
  • Familiarity with electricity market operations and compliance.

Additional Information

This is a permanent opportunity based in Tauranga.

Our team operates in a dynamic, fast paced environment.

Electricity generation never sleeps; our Hydro assets operate 24/7 so this role requires shift work on a rotational roster basis, working 12-hour shifts (usually 7am-7pm) as part of a 24/7, 365 days a year roster.

We are keen to hear from individuals with diverse backgrounds.

Historically, successful applicants have possessed experience in hydrology, financial trading, banking, oil & gas, mechanical engineering, electrical trade certification, NZ Navy or Airforce, and even physics. Training and development opportunities will be provided, but you need to be prepared to work hard and get up to speed quickly.
