About the role

This role is brand new, and is an exciting opportunity for the right person, to lead a passionate team of land management advisors at a time of significant positive change for the region.

You will contribute to the field of the sustainable management through policy development and implementation methods - including education, advocacy, projects and programmes in the fields of soil conservation, water quality, biodiversity, riparian management and land use capability.

Reporting to the Integrated Catchments Manager your role will be field, and office based and you will lead a well resourced land management team.

You'll recognise the importance of the role as a Treaty partner and understand how that underpins Gisborne District Council's work.

Duties Include:

  • Providing direction and oversight to the land management team
  • Ensuring a coordinated approach with catchment groups, landowners, mana whenua, iwi and industry
  • Leading the establishment of a coordinated approach to Te Mana o te Wai by developing and actioning land surveys and erosion control plans for inclusion in Freshwater Farm Plans and eventually wider Integrated Farm Plans that are consistent with regional and national requirements
  • Leading land management and catchment based intervention programmes
  • Skills & experience
  • A tertiary degree or post graduate diploma in Environmental Science, Biological Sciences, Geography, Geology or appropriate science discipline with at least 5 years relevant workplace experience
  • Strong leadership and management skills
  • Advanced communication
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively establish and build on internal and external working relationships
  • Prior experience and knowledge engaging and working with hapu/iwi, Maori and communities across the region
