Job description

Paid summer internships at Marlborough District Council offering hands-on experience across diverse teams including legal, science, recreation, and gardens.

Your Role

Key responsibilities include:

  • Environmental Science and Monitoring: Bathing water sampling, low flow gauging, data processing, site maintenance, surveying, SOE sampling, river gauging, and general fieldwork.

  • Legal: Work on local government law matters including governance, regulatory compliance, contracts, resource management, official information, privacy, and property.

  • Strategic Management / Marketing & Communications: Complete Town Centre Health Check project, assist with marketing and content creation, and support website development.

  • Recreation: Assist with summer programmes and events, support day-to-day operations at Lansdowne Hub and Port Marlborough Pavilion.

  • Gardens: Outdoor work in Pollard Park and Seymour Square, applying practical horticulture skills and learning about botanic gardens.

About You

The company is looking for:

  • Students who have completed or will complete at least their first year of a New Zealand tertiary qualification by internship start.

  • Availability from November 2025 to February 2026, residing in Marlborough during this period.

  • Good communication, organisational skills, reliability, positive attitude, and ability to work independently and in teams.

  • Comfortable with digital tools such as email, spreadsheets, and online systems.

  • Open to feedback and willing to grow.

  • Legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

  • Specific role requirements:
    • Environmental Science: Enrolled in Environmental Science degree with interest in monitoring/fieldwork.

    • Strategic Management / Marketing & Communications: Studying commerce, marketing, management or communications with research, data analysis, report writing, presentation skills; creativity; basic graphic design and photography/video editing skills advantageous; interest in website development beneficial.

    • Recreation: Pursuing degree in recreation or sports, outgoing, comfortable working with children.

    • Gardens: Experience in practical horticulture, passion for plants, enthusiasm for outdoor work and learning.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hourly rate of $24.00 plus 8% Holiday Pay.
