OverviewJoin to apply for the Statutory and Community Manager role at Department of Conservation (DOC).
The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature across Aotearoa.
When nature thrives, we all thrive.The new Statutory and Community Manager role will play a pivotal part in the management of public conservation land and conservation values in the region.
Reporting to the Director, Regional Operations, you'll lead the region's work programmes ensuring permissions, regulatory and statutory outcomes are met.
This is a leadership role that blends regulatory expertise with people-centred engagement — ideal for someone who thrives on complexity, collaboration and conservation impact.This role can be based out of one of our offices across Queenstown, Dunedin or Invercargill.
Responsibilities
Ensure statutory processes are delivered efficiently, transparently, and in alignment with legislation, Treaty settlement obligations, and DOC values.
Lead a team to deliver permissions, RMA and other statutory land functions, OIA and ministerial correspondence for the region.
Provide support to the Director and Regional Leadership Team for strategic issue management in the region.
Collaborate with internal and external regulatory stakeholders to share information, build relationships, identify opportunities, and resolve issues.
Create regional improvements in the delivery of regulatory processes, linking with processes led by other authorities (e.g., councils) in relation to DOC's statutory obligations.
Foster a positive team environment through guidance, training and development opportunities.
Skills and experience
Experience as a people leader who can empower and develop an inclusive, collaborative team from diverse locations.
Background in Regulatory, Statutory, Legal or related field.
Deep understanding of the Resource Management Act, Conservation Act, and related legislation.
Strong relationship management skills, especially with iwi/hapu and community stakeholders.
Excellent judgement, communication and problem-solving skills.
Experience in legislative decision-making with understanding of legal parameters.
