The role | Te mahi

This is a fixed term Academic-year-only position to be part of a small team covering demonstrator and technical support for teaching laboratories in the School of Physical Education, Sport and Exercise Sciences.

In the role, you will be involved in providing both demonstrator and technical services for undergraduate teaching labs in areas such as exercise physiology, biomechanics and motor learning.

You will be assigned as either a technician or demonstrator for specific labs as required by the laboratory demands.

Key tasks include:
• Leading SPEX tutorials and/or demonstrate laboratories
• Assess tutorial and/or laboratory reports and providing meaningful feedback to students
• Marking of SPEX assessments and exams
• Delivery of whānau labs and tutorials with a whakawhanaukataka student focus
• Setup of equipment for labs and supporting during more complex labs, including running of equipment when required.
• Ensuring sufficient consumable items are available for each laboratory cycle.
• Providing technical support for Postgraduate research.
• Involvement in commercial exercise testing services as well as tours and lab experiences for High School student groups.

The role requires you to maintain safety standards for use of Laboratory equipment and experimental techniques as well as regular maintenance of equipment.

This is a varied and broad technical/demonstrator role that allows for opportunities for the right candidate who wishes to expand their skillset in a dynamic work environment.

Due to the broad range the expectation is that role specific training and support will be provided as required.

Successful candidates will have:
• Relevant tertiary education, preferably a qualification in the areas of Exercise and Sport Science.
• Experience working in Exercise Sport Science Laboratory or clinical testing is advantageous.
• Excellent knowledge of sport & Exercise science theory and practice
• Previous teaching experience
• Preference for experience working within a kaupapa Māori environment, demonstrating an understanding and ability to uphold Māori values, and working with students in a culturally safe way.
• Confidence with technology.
• Excellent Computing skills
• Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines, and able to prioritise own work schedule.
• Dedication to working in a culturally safe and respectful way, with an understanding of Te Ao Māori, the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi, and Pasifika values.

This full-time (37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday) fixed-term role runs for the academic year (February–October), with additional marking work in November as needed.

The position will begin on 16 February 2026 in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

You must have the right to live and work in New Zealand to apply for this role.

Typical hours are 8.30am-5pm however as labs and tutorials can run from 8am-6pm Monday to Friday, hours of work will require some flexibility.

The salary level for this position is Level 4 $63,508 to $68,185, Top of Range $73,640.
