Through our innovative digital-first approach, patients can choose to be seen in person at our clinics, or digitally via the Tend app.
We aim to provide the best tools to our clinicians, from Patient Management System integration to cutting-edge AI assistants.The RoleWe're seeking a talented and versatile Senior or Intermediate Software Engineer to join our high-caliber product, design and engineering team.
As part of our small but mighty team, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the future of digital healthcare in New Zealand.
You will be responsible for delivering business value by designing and developing software in a highly collaborative environment.
As a team, we are tackling a hugely complex problem space.
As we learn where we need to focus to achieve our goals, priorities can and will change regularly.
You should be comfortable working in an environment where change is constant and be confident to help navigate the way forward.
We encourage and expect you to use – or at least investigate – the current state-of-the-art tools, currently AI/ML, and also think about how to apply those tools and technologies to the Tend platform for use by our customers, both internal and external.
We are constantly looking for ways to improve the experience of our patients and clinicians, as well as use and maintain a modern, leading edge software delivery platform.

We utilise techniques like feature flagging to ensure that we can do this safely and efficientlyContinuous learning: While we use specific technologies, we're more interested in your ability to learn and adapt than in your exact match with our current stackCollaboration: Our small team works closely together, sharing knowledge and supporting each other's growth.Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and maintain applications that power Tend Health's innovative healthcare servicesWork across the entire technology stack, from customer-facing interfaces to backend systems, databases and infrastructureCollaborate with cross-functional teams across the business to design, implement, and ship new featuresDemonstrate a strong understanding of application security (like OWASP) and NZ privacy principles, with a commitment to incorporating these considerations into all aspects of software development to safeguard sensitive healthcare data and ensure compliance with relevant regulationsContribute to architectural decisions and help evolve our technology stackShare knowledge across the engineering teamRequired Qualifications3+ years of professional software engineering experiencePreference for a range of skills across the whole stack, but not a requirement.
A willingness to apply your skills in all layers is a mustAbility to work as part of a team in a fast-paced environmentExcellent problem-solving skills and attention to detailStrong communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with non-technical stakeholdersPreferred Skills And ExperienceExperience with React and React NativeFamiliarity with GraphQL, specifically ApolloKnowledge of AWS services, particularly Lambda, SQS, DynamoDB, and KinesisSome proficiency in TypeScript (or Javascript)Experience with SQL, specifically PostgreSQLUnderstanding of Serverless and Event Driven architecturesA willingness to explore new technologies including AI/ML, both using them for day to day work, and incorporating them into our productsPassion for healthcare technology and improving patient outcomes.Our Tech StackFrontend: React, ReactNative, Apollo Client, ViteAPI Layer: GraphQL, with some RESTBackend: AWS Lambda, Apollo ServerLanguage: TypeScript, with a little Swift/Kotlin/Terraform for good measureDatabase: PostgreSQL, with some DynamoDB and othersAdditional Technologies: AWS services (SQS, DynamoDB, Kinesis, Bedrock)Core use of AI/LLM models inside the product (usually Claude 4, via Bedrock)We have a hybrid mode of working, where we are in the office at least one day a week (if possible) so we can have our main team meetings.
