About the role

The Department of Conservation has recently made some exciting changes in how we deliver our work – so we can achieve the conservation outcomes we’re aiming for.

As part of this, we’ve introduced a new role: Senior Statutory Advisor.

Reporting to the Statutory and Community Manager, you’ll get to work across the region providing subject matter expertise to advise and deliver on permissions, statutory and strategic issues resulting in better outcomes for conservation.

The position will be focussed on:

  • Using your expertise to provide advice to resolve complex strategic issues and opportunities
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of our regulatory process as aligned to the region’s work programme
  • Collaborating and maintaining positive working relationships internally and externally to support delivery of conservation in a statutory environment
  • Identifying critical issues and risks and ensuring they are managed effectively

We are open to considering Queenstown, Te Anau and Invercargill locations.

Skills and experience

If you have some of the following, we are keen to hear from you:

  • A tertiary qualification in regulatory, statutory legal or a related field
  • Experienced in applying policy, statutory processes and legislation to critically assess risk, complexity and priority
  • Ability to interpret information and provide technical advice to applicants and stakeholders
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and keep everything on track to meet deadlines
  • Experience applying Treaty settlement legalisation to give effect to or to inform statutory decisions
  • Continuous‑improvement mentality, always seeking ways to improve systems and processes
  • Collaborative team player, with experience mentoring and developing others and confident with managing relationships with a variety of stakeholders
  • Solutions focussed and consistently act with integrity to deliver meaningful results
  • Understands where the Māori–Crown relationship plays a key role in DOC’s responsibilities and decision making

The salary range for this position is $92,912 - $117,570 with the starting salary of the successful applicant being based on their relevant skills and experience.
