Senior Policy Analyst – Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI)

Permanent, full-time, Wellington.

Salary D: $100,934 to $135,076 (midpoint $118,005).

About the Role

As a Senior Policy Analyst you will play a key role in supporting the sustainable growth and resilience of New Zealand's fruit, vegetable, arable, wine and floriculture sectors.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Provide strategic and regulatory policy advice to reduce regulatory burden.

  • Contribute to cross‑government initiatives and help reduce regulatory burden where possible.

  • Collaborate closely with other MPI teams and agencies such as MBIE and MfE to ensure the horticulture supply chain is supported and sector needs are well understood.

  • Support implementation of the sector‑led Aotearoa Horticulture Action Plan.

  • Lead gene technology and resource management reforms.

  • Develop plant variety rights policy.

  • Steward regulatory primary legislation such as the Commodity Levies Act, Horticulture Export Authority Act and Kiwifruit Export Regulations.

Qualifications

  • At least five years of experience in policy development at a senior level.

  • Strong understanding of government and parliamentary processes.

  • Proven ability to manage projects and deliver high‑quality work.

  • Experience building and maintaining effective relationships with stakeholders, Māori and other government agencies.

  • Knowledge of the primary sector’s structure and economic and resource management policy frameworks.

  • Horticulture experience is beneficial but not essential.
