Who we are

The University of Otago, Wellington (UOW) provides health research and teaching in New Zealand’s capital city.

It enjoys collaborative relationships with Te Whatu Ora, local health service providers, multiple central and local government agencies such as the Ministry of Health/Manatū Hauora and Wellington City Council/Me Heke Ki Pōneke as well as other tertiary education providers such as Massey University/Te Kunenga Ki Pūrehuora and Victoria University/Te Herenga Waka.

It also has strong links with local iwi.

Te Tari Whaiora/the Department of Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, University of Otago, Wellington includes over forty academic staff, a varying number of full-time research staff and five administrative staff.

The major research interests of the Department include internal medicine specialties, sleep, aviation medicine, rehabilitation, and medical education.

We are committed to working closely with iwi and Māori organisations, and mātauraka Māori has become an integral part of teaching and research across the institution.

The role | Te mahi

This Senior Lecturer role represents an exciting opportunity to make a significant contribution to ongoing teaching of students while being well supported by a collegial and dynamic Department and University.

In this role you will be expected to convene and teach within the MBChB ALM (endorsed for Oncology).

The bachelor involves both theory and practice.

Your role will be to sub-convene the course and contribute to teaching within it.

You will also contribute to the teaching of medical students in particular and other departmental teaching programmes, depending on your particular expertise.

You will be encouraged to supervise doctoral students if appropriately qualified.

All staff are expected to contribute to departmental and Faculty examination duties.

Particular emphasis will be placed on your research track record and capacity to attract external research funding and research students.

Your skills and experience | Kā pūkeka me kā wheako

• An appropriate medical registration.
• A PhD or equivalent research degree.
• Expertise in clinical teaching.
• Expertise in Oncology.
• A commitment to research and proven research track record.
• The ability to work independently and also as a team member.
• Knowledge of Te Tiriti O Waitangi, and commitment to practice and teach in a manner consistent with the principles of Te Tiriti.

This is a part-time (0.3 FTE), permanent position based in Wellington.

Ideally this role will start 1st February 2026.

The appointment range for this role is $148,416 to $184,993 per annum (pro-rata).

It is anticipated that the successful application will concurrently hold a part-time clinical job in working within their discipline.
