About the Role - Korero mo te Turanga
Join us in the Regulatory & Risk Assurance team as we ensure the Biosecurity Import & Export Standards Directorate's regulatory activities are consistent, calibrated and cohesive.
As our Senior Adviser Standards Frameworks & Assurance you will be supported to lead regulatory reform to enhance our Biosecurity system.
You will be able to confidently and successfully work with a range of subject matter experts to identify and develop new and better ways to achieve regulatory outcomes.
You will facilitate innovative approaches to problems, particularly those that improve accessibility and compliance, reduce complexity and minimise costs.
Responsibilities
Lead and contribute to regulatory reform initiatives that strengthen New Zealand's biosecurity system
Provide strategic advice and thought leadership on regulatory performance, stewardship, and system design
Collaborate with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure our biosecurity regulatory frameworks are effective, risk-based, and future-ready
Support the development of tools, guidance, and capability-building activities that enhance regulatory practice
Mentor and support team members, fostering a collaborative and high-performing culture
This is a dynamic and impactful role where you'll help shape the future of biosecurity regulation in Aotearoa.
About You - Mou
To be successful in this role, you will bring:
A tertiary qualification in public policy, law, economics, political science, or a related discipline
At least 5 years' experience in regulatory, policy, or public sector roles, with exposure to regulatory systems and stewardship
Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to assess complex systems and identify opportunities for improvement
Demonstrated ability to undertake robust policy analysis and provide implementation support for regulatory changes
Excellent communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, accessible advice
Proven ability to build relationships and work collaboratively across diverse teams and stakeholders
An understanding of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and its relevance to regulatory system design and stewardship is highly valued

About the Team - Mo to matou Ropu
The Biosecurity Risk Advice group sits within the Biosecurity Import and Export Standards directorate of Biosecurity New Zealand.
Our directorate is responsible for managing the pre-border part of New Zealand's biosecurity system by stopping pests from coming into the country.
The Regulatory and Risk Assurance team focuses on ensuring the directorate's regulatory activities are consistent, cohesive, and calibrated.
You will be supporting the delivery of regulatory reform by providing system-level analysis and working collaboratively across MPI and with external partners to strengthen biosecurity standards.
