Job description

Ranger – Biodiversity/Heritage & Visitors

An exciting opportunity for a full‑time ranger with the Tiritiri Matangi Island team.

Salary: $65,070 – $75,981 per annum, depending on skill and experience.

Posting: 3‑year full‑time island assignment with option to extend for an additional 2 years.

Accommodation is provided during the shift; the ranger will live on the island for the duration of the shift and have off days as per roster.

About the role

Tiritiri Matangi is a world‑renowned island sanctuary that welcomes over 30,000 visitors each year.

Following predator eradication, the island now protects rare native bird species and tuatara within restored habitats.

The role is critical for safeguarding the island’s biodiversity, caring for cultural and natural heritage, and delivering an outstanding visitor experience.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with the public, including public speaking to large audiences.

  • Collaborate with iwi partners and community groups.

  • Amenity maintenance and groundskeeping.

  • Conduct visitor facility inductions.

  • Advocate and surveil biosecurity.

  • Ensure visitor safety.

  • Maintain infrastructure.

  • Support biodiversity projects such as Hihi and Takahē recovery.

  • Volunteer management.

Skills and experience

Required:

  • Backcountry field skills and biodiversity experience.

  • Experience living and working in remote islands.

  • Strong communication skills.

  • Experience working with iwi.

  • Infrastructure maintenance background.

  • Proficiency in scrub bar maintenance and weed spraying.

  • Physical fitness and ability to adhere to health, safety and well‑being systems.

  • Basic skills in solar, septic and water infrastructure.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

  • New Zealand driver licence (manual desired).

Desirable:

  • Chainsaw operation, scrub bars and LUV driving.

  • First Aid certificate.

About the team

The ranger reports to the Supervisor within the Inner Islands team.

The wider team is distributed across islands within the Hauraki Gulf, with senior staff based on the mainland.
