The opportunity

We are seeking a Professional Teaching Fellow to join Te Kupenga Hauora Māori at the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences.

You will be required to teach into the foundation biology courses within the Hikitia te Ora (The Certificate in Health Sciences) programme.  These courses provide students with an introduction to the structure, function and process of the human body at the cellular and tissue levels, alongside practical experience in laboratory environments.

Hikitia te Ora is a bridging/foundational programme for students of Māori and Pacific ancestry.

This position will also enable you to contribute to Māori Health curriculum planning, development and implementation.

This is a fixed term (9 months) full time role (40 hours per week).

The salary range for the role is $103,717 $136,470 based on skills and experience.

Key Accountabilities include:

  • Coordinating and delivering foundation biology courses within Hikitia te Ora Certificate in Health Sciences.
  • Developing teaching and assessment materials and ensure fair, consistent marking and feedback.
  • Providing academic and pastoral support, fostering an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment.
  • Contributing to curriculum development, course evaluation, and quality assurance within Te Kupenga Hauora Māori.
  • Supporting key teaching, service, and recruitment activities.

He korero mou | About you | Our ideal candidate

Were looking for someone that possesses an in-depth understanding of Māori and Pacific culture with strong connections to these communities.

You will have a postgraduate qualification in biology, anatomy, biomedical sciences or a closely related field.

Prior teaching experience at a tertiary level is also required.

Experience in developing educational material and an understanding of adult and bridging/foundational learning theory and practice are also valuable skills for this position.

Candidates must be flexible with tasks as required for the role, including attending weekend and evening wānanga and related activities, have excellent time management skills with the ability to prioritise tasks, and excellent oral and written communication skills.  A willingness to learn new skills, develop new competencies, and have a commitment to quality and continuous improvement are essential requirements for this position.

The ability to work with minimal supervision and use initiative is crucial, as is working in an Indigenous teaching space in a culturally safe manner.

Commitment to te reo and tikanga Māori is essential.

You will enjoy interacting with a wide range of people as well as working collaboratively in a team.

Skills required for this role include advanced knowledge of software packages including:

  • MS Programmes including Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
  • Advanced document and spreadsheet formatting
  • Teaching platforms such as Canvas
