The opportunity
We're looking for a Payments and API Integration Specialist to help design, deliver, and maintain the systems that connect Inland Revenue with New Zealand's banking and payments ecosystem.

You'll also be part of our wider Gateway Delivery team, working alongside passionate professionals who support a broad range of innovative digital services.
Note - Internally this role is known as a level two technology specialist.
What you'll do
Support the design, development and maintenance of Inland Revenue's banking and payment APIs and system interfaces (e.g., bank account validation, refunds, disbursements).
You will:
* work closely with architects, developers, and banking partners to deliver reliable, secure, and efficient digital payment services
* contribute to integration projects with digital service providers with other IR gateway services
* assist with testing, monitoring, documentation, and issue resolution
* ensure compliance with Inland Revenue's security, privacy, and data handling standards
* provide support and advice to colleagues across the business who rely on payments services.
What we're looking for
Technical skills, including the following:
* Experience working with APIs and specification documentation (design, consumption, or testing)
* Understanding of software development lifecycles from testing to production migration with post implementation and production support of solutions
* Knowledge of payment and reconciliation systems (refunds, disbursements, bank file processing, or real-time payments)
* Familiarity with JSON, RESTful APIs, API gateways, and authentication methods (OAuth2, tokens) and STFP file transfer protocols
* Understanding of secure data exchange, monitoring, and troubleshooting
Professional skills, including the following:
* Three-five years' experience in software development, integration, or digital services, ideally in the banking, payments, or government services sector
* Analytical mindset with the ability to investigate and resolve system issues
* Clear communication skills to work with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
* Team-oriented, collaborative approach with a willingness to learn from specialists with different expertise
