Ophthalmic Dispensing Technician (Teaching Technologist-Ophthalmic) role at University of Auckland.

The Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Ophthalmic Dispensing Technician (Teaching Technologist-Ophthalmic) to contribute to the delivery of high-quality clinical education within the University of Auckland Eye Clinic.

This role supports the optometry programme by providing expert technical guidance in ophthalmic dispensing.

You will work with academic staff and student optometrists to ensure safe and timely dispensing services to the public.

Responsibilities include supervising and supporting operational and clinical procedures, advising on complex spectacle-related issues, and maintaining high standards of service quality and compliance.

You will also help develop and implement pedagogically sound learning materials and activities.

You will collaborate with academic teams to align technical training with course outcomes, contribute to assessment design, and support innovation in teaching practices.

This is an opportunity to influence the next generation of optometrists through a combination of technical expertise and educational leadership.

This is a fixed-term (9 months), part-time position (15–22.5 hours per week).

The salary range is between $72,000 – $88,900 (pro-rated) based on skills and experience.

Qualifications

  • Qualified dispensing optician with a strong technical foundation and a commitment to excellence in clinical education.

  • Minimum of three years’ experience in the optical industry and ability to translate complex technical knowledge into effective learning experiences.

  • Holds a graduate qualification in a relevant discipline and is eligible for registration with the Optometrists and Dispensing Opticians Board of New Zealand.

  • Proven technical proficiency in ophthalmic dispensing (lens fitting, frame adjustments, troubleshooting).

  • Effective communicator across diverse stakeholder groups and contributes to team environments.

  • Experience supporting teaching and learning in a clinical or technical setting with sound pedagogical understanding.

  • Organised, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple responsibilities in a dynamic clinical teaching space.

  • Commitment to staying current with industry developments and emerging technologies in ophthalmic dispensing.
