He whakamarama mo te turanga mahi | About the role:
We have an opportunity for an Operational Competency Manager to join the RSAS Quality and Compliance team.
In this role, you'll support maintenance teams nationwide to apply safe practices when working with rail vehicles and energy sources.
You'll mentor minders, safety observation assessors, and operators.
You'll also conduct mastery tests, lead audits, and investigate incidents, helping our frontline teams improve their skills and keep safety front of mind.
Your work will ensure RSAS continues to meet regulatory obligations and operates within KiwiRail's safety framework.
This role can be based in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, or Palmerston North, and requires travel across the network.

You will bring:
Passion and pride in safe, efficient operations
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
The ability to coach, mentor, and influence others
Knowledge of operating rules and procedures
Flexibility to work independently and manage competing priorities
A valid Full Class 1 Driver Licence
It would also be great if you have:
Current operating licences for shunting and driving
Experience in coaching, mentoring, or auditing
A Level 5 Mechanical Engineering qualification (or equivalent)
5+ years' experience in a rail or heavy industrial environment
Experience in depot track protection and lockout/isolation
A background in coaching, mentoring, or auditing within rail or heavy industry
