The Department of Mechanical Engineering within the School of Engineering, Computer and Mathematical Sciences (SECMS) at AUT is seeking to appoint a permanent staff at a Lecturer in Computational Continuum Mechanics position.

Candidate should have a PhD and a record of teaching experience and research success in the of Computational Continuum Mechanics areas in Engineering.


The commencement date will be in December 2025 or by negotiation.


The Department of Mechanical Engineering is one of five departments of the SECMS and currently has academic programmes in Mechanical and Mechatronics at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, with strong interests in Energy, Design, Materials and Manufacturing, Biomedical Engineering, System Dynamic and Control, Robotics and Mechatronics.

Our programs are contemporary and popular, and we have built a reputation of excellence in teaching, research and engagement with the wider community through the dedication and expertise of our staff.

The school currently has over 2800 equivalent full-time students and about 120 permanent academic staff with approximately 190 PhD students.


This position will involve conducting high quality research, teaching and developing academic programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

A successful applicant will be expected to contribute to research and postgraduate supervision in one or more of the above-mentioned areas through her/his specialist field and take a leading role in service and teaching.

The salary level offered, and related workload conditions will be commensurate with the skills and experience of the successful applicant.

Essential


  • PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related Engineering field with a specialization in Computational Continuum Mechanics (CCM)
  • Sound knowledge in continuum mechanics principles, numerical methods and relevant CCM software such as ANSYS Mechanical, Fluent, LS-DYNA and OpenFOAM.
  • Demonstrated ability in applying computational continuum mechanics (CCM) in various fields of solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, biomechanics and materials science.
  • Capable of developing relevant course contents including lab development, lectures and capacity to adapt to a range of learning and teaching styles and employing diverse delivery techniques to a wide range of students
  • Independent research experience and ability to undertake research in related areas through project supervision, publications and, where relevant, associated scholarly activities
  • Communication and teamwork skills to foster a cooperative work culture both within and outside the school
  • Awareness and commitment to Te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity

  • Sound skills and ability to conduct teaching and research on various continuum mechanics by taking an interdisciplinary approach
  • Ability to secure research funding, initiate projects and develop partnerships with industry stakeholders
  • Ability and preparedness to participate in the school-wide administrative duties.
