Start your conservation journey with Te Pu Hono – become a kaihono taiao!

The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC)
The Department of Conservation Te Papa Atawhai (DOC) serves to protect and restore nature across Aotearoa.
When nature thrives, we all thrive.
Te Pu Hono Cadetship Programme
Te Papa Atawhai the Department of Conservation is offering an opportunity of a lifetime, to join Te Pu Hono, a 30-month entry-level programme designed to grow Aotearoa's next generation of conservation rangers.
Te Pu Hono is more than just any programme – it's the start of your conservation journey.
You'll join a close-knit team of new cadets (Kaihonoa Taiao) and gain hands-on experience, practical skills, and deep connections with te taiao (the natural world), our people, and the motu.
You'll be supported every step of the way by your Pou Tuhono – your guide, mentor, and connector.
Each year, we recruit 10 new Kaihonoa Taiao.
The first intake will be based out of Renwick (South Island).
The programme offers you the chance to live, learn, and work in some of Aotearoa's most stunning and remote places.
Over three years, you'll complete a mix of:
Essential skills like predator control, weed management, and species monitoring
Gain hands-on experience with DOC teams across the motu
Elective modules, giving you a chance to explore areas like carpentry, abseiling, wildlife health, and species translocation.
Skills and experience
We're keen to hear from you if you have:
At least NCEA Level 2 literacy and numeracy
Are very fit and healthy, and able to work in remote areas
Can travel and live away from home for extended periods
Are comfortable working outdoors in all conditions – including helicopters, heights, and rugged terrain
Hold a full, clean driver's licence
A willingness to grow and develop your own cultural capability and understanding in this space
We welcome people from all backgrounds and life stages — whether you're just starting out, exploring a career change, or drawing on existing experience.
If you're ready to challenge yourself, grow your skills, and contribute to meaningful mahi, we'd love to hear from you.
What's in it for you?
As a Kaihonoa Taiao, you'll gain real-world conservation experience through structured learning, hands-on fieldwork in diverse and often challenging environments, and strong connections with the whenua, DOC teams and fellow cadets.
This immersive journey not only builds your skills and confidence but also opens a pathway into permanent conservation roles within DOC.
We're committed to genuine partnership with Maori, empowering participation, protecting rights, and promoting equity through culturally safe, inclusive, and responsive approaches.
If you're open and receptive to grow your cultural skills and awareness, and contribute to meaningful work, we'd love to hear from you.
