Our Ecology + Water Science team is looking for an intermediate freshwater or marine ecologist to join our diverse consulting team who are based throughout New Zealand.

We are seeking an ecologist with between three to six years professional experience who enjoys professional freedom and autonomy and is ready for the next step in their career.


You'll be working on rewarding and challenging projects right from the start with the opportunity to contribute to great ecological outcomes, work directly with clients and manage your own project contributions.

You will have the opportunity to work in a range of aquatic habitats, with a range of fauna and on diverse fieldwork programmes, and with a great team of technical specialists.


We would love to know what gets you out of bed in the morning to help you shape this role for yourself and to suit your strengths, but as a starting point the sort of work you can expect to be involved will include:


  • A range of scientific and ecological technical services in a variety of freshwater and marine ecosystems, including habitat assessment and mapping, water and sediment quality assessments, fauna surveys and fauna salvage and relocation.
  • Data collection, management, analysis and presentation.
  • Report writing, including preparation of technical reports, compliance reports, ecological management/restoration plans and ecological impact assessment reports.
  • Planning, co-ordinating and leading fieldwork activities in collaboration with project teams.
  • Collaborating on projects with our internal teams across environmental geoscience, planning, geotechnical, civil, water, coastal and environmental engineering teams.
  • Consideration of sustainability and nature-based solutions in project work.
  • Liaison with T+T staff, Council personnel, clients and DOC representatives
  • Engagement with mana whenua and incorporation of Mātauranga Māori into project work

  • This full-time position will be based in our Auckland office with travel required for project work and the ability to work from other office locations.

    Nā tōu rourou | What you'll bring


  • A minimum of a bachelor's degree in Ecology, Zoology or closely related discipline, MSc desirable
  • Three to six years' professional work experience in a consulting, regulatory and / or research environment
  • High level of organisation, time management, able to manage competing demands in a fast-paced work environment
  • Experience preparing technical ecology reports, including compliance reports
  • Experience collecting a range of ecological data, data management and record keeping
  • Strong analytical and mathematical abilities
  • GPS, GIS skills and digital mapping competencies
  • Good communication skills, able to confidently communicate with a range of people, and you need to be able to work well with others.

    Previous experience leading a field team preferable
  • Be field competent and comfortable working in remote and rough terrain
  • Be Health and Safety conscious
  • Solution focused with problem solving skills, high attention to detail and professional initiative
  • Full NZ drivers' licence
