Mō te tūnga | About the role
The Health and Safety advisor supports the Navy's Occupational Safety and Health units (NAVOSH) objectives by contributing to support Health and Safety Leadership, Risk Management, and other Defence Force requirements such as environmental policy.
A typical day in this role would include the following:
* Identifying hazards/risks by undertaking audits, inspections, and accident investigations to eliminate or minimise the risks so far as is reasonably practicable.
* Providing coaching, training, and support to all personnel (including senior level management) on health, safety, and environmental matters in accordance with Defence Force Orders and NAVOSH procedures.
* Ensuring the certification and safety of Hazardous Substances locations is maintained and by providing timely hazardous substances advice.
* Maximising the utilisation of the electronic Safety Event Management Tool system, ensuring occurrences are fully recorded, as well as making recommendations to Command following any accidents or incidents as required.
Due to the nature of this role, there is very limited ability to work remotely.
The role is based at Devonport Navy Base however you maybe required to attend other Auckland camps and bases.

This role will require an experienced Health and Safety Advisor, who has a Tertiary level Health and Safety Diploma (or equivalent), wide experience and skills, and has worked within a continual improvement system (such as AS/NZS ISO 45001).
As the successful candidate, you will also exhibit the following qualities:
* A strong understanding of New Zealand H&S legislation (technical), safety management systems and associated matters including safety management, occupational health and hazardous substances.
* Proven experience in Safety Risk Management, audit, and accident/incident investigation.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to relate confidently and professionally with a wide range of people and across all levels.
* Demonstrated computer literacy particularly with Microsoft Office.
You need to have a Class 1 Full Driver's Licence.

Low Level Security Clearance
* You must be a New Zealand citizen or you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa.
* At minimum, you must hold New Zealand Permanent Residence or have a current New Zealand Residency Class Visa, and you must be a citizen of and have lived in Australia, Canada, United Kingdom, United States of America or New Zealand continuously for the last five (5) years.
* You must have a five (5) year background history that can be verified and assessed appropriately by the NZ Security Intelligence Service (NZSIS) to determine if you are suitable for a security clearance at this level.
If you do not meet the minimum criteria, unfortunately, your application will not be accepted.
