    WasteNet Southland is a shared solid waste service for the Gore District Council, Invercargill City Council and Southland District Council.

    Their mission is to provide the co-ordinated delivery of solid waste services within Southland in line with their sustainability goals.

    Their focus is on working towards zero waste through effective education, waste prevention, minimisation and resource stewardship.

    The WasteNet Governance Group has created a new opportunity for a General Manager – Waste Management and Minimisation to lead and co-ordinate waste management and minimization services for the Southland region.

    This is pivotal role and one that will provide insights from the wider industry, creating solution-focused programmes for their future operation.

    About the opportunity

    The General Manager – Waste Management and Minimisation provides the key link between the WasteNet Governance Group and the Councils.

    As General Manager – Waste Management and Minimisation you will drive strategic direction, facilitate change, and ensure overall alignment of WasteNet operations.

    Core accountabilities of this role include:

  • Identifying trends, innovations, and improvements to support policy decisions and achieve strategic goals.
  • Coach and motivate team members, fostering a collaborative and supportive work culture.
  • Ensure effective financial management in accordance with Council guidelines.
  • Serve as WasteNet's expert on solid waste and waste minimization services.
  • Reporting to, and participating in, WasteNet Governance meetings.
  • Building professional relationships within Councils and the wider industry.
  • About you

    With a relevant tertiary qualification, and industry background you will have proven experience in achieving and managing outcomes through working with external contracting partners within a local government setting.

    Your leadership and influencing skills, will be complimented by your ability to foster effective working relationships and navigate competing political wills to arrive at consensus outcomes.

    With an in-depth understanding of global and national trends you will have the ability to navigate industry change, and your progressive mindset will identify new opportunities for the region.

    A strong communicator, accompanied with commercial acumen will see you successfully drive this critical pillar within Southland’s sustainability framework.

    Waihōpai Invercargill, New Zealand’s southernmost city, lies in the heart of Southland.
