Urgent! General Manager, Competition and Fair Trading (and Credit) Job Opening In Wellington – Now Hiring New Zealand Government

General Manager, Competition and Fair Trading (and Credit)

Job description

The Commerce Commission | Te Komihana Tauhokohoko is New Zealand's competition, consumer, consumer credit, and economic regulatory agency.

Our mission is to ensure New Zealand's markets are competitive, consumers and businesses are well informed, and sectors with little or no competition are appropriately regulated.

As an independent Crown entity, we enforce laws relating to competition, fair trading, and consumer credit contracts.

About the Role
This is a rare senior executive opportunity to lead a critical regulatory function at the heart of New Zealand's economic and consumer wellbeing.

You'll work at the intersection of public policy, enforcement and commercial practice, influencing and leading your teams to deliver outcomes that matter to every New Zealander.

You'll also be part of a values-driven organisation that fosters innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Reporting to the Chief Executive, this is a unique opportunity for a talented executive leader to oversee, develop, and be accountable for the Competition and Fair Trading branch, as well as the Credit function until its transfer through to the Financial Market Authority.
You will lead a high-performing leadership team and play a pivotal role in shaping the future of competition and fair trading regulation in New Zealand.

You will be responsible for delivering outcomes-focused strategies, overseeing enforcement and compliance, and ensuring the branch's work aligns with the Commission's strategic priorities.

You will work closely with the Commission's Board to ensure the branch and Board are aligned and the branch meets their expectations.
As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you will demonstrate collective impact and a ‘One Commission' mindset, contributing to the overall leadership and direction of the organisation.

In particular, you will work closely with the General Counsel and General Manager, Market Regulation on cross-organisational priorities and outcomes.

You will represent your branch and the Commission domestically and internationally and will be a confident spokesperson for our work.

About you
To be successful in this role, you will be an open, empowering and people focused leader of leaders, with a proven history of enhancing regulatory systems.

You will be a strategic thinker with the ability to foster innovation and continuous improvement to achieve this.

We are looking for someone who has the following skills and experience:
* Proven senior executive leadership experience, ideally within regulatory, legal, or commercial environments.
* Deep expertise in competition, fair trading, and/or consumer regulatory work.
* A track record of delivering operational outcomes aligned with strategic goals.
* Demonstrated ability to lead high performing, engaged teams and drive organisational change.
* Strong commercial acumen and sound judgement to ensure resources are deployed effectively.
* Experience working with Boards, Ministers, and a wide range of stakeholders across government, business, and the community.
* A commitment to supporting Te Ao Māori and an in-depth understanding of the machinery of government.
* A learning mindset and continual curiosity about the New Zealand business and consumer environment
* A confident and compelling communicator, comfortable fronting enforcement and compliance work with media, presenting at conferences, and facilitating panels with credibility and impact
