The New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa is one of TAU’s key cultural destinations, telling the stories of Aotearoa’s maritime heritage and its ongoing connection to the sea.

Celebrating the connection between people and the sea, the team of passionate staff and volunteers share New Zealand’s history and inspirational stories through extensive galleries, exhibitions, programmes and on-water experiences.

Sitting at the gateway of Auckland’s vibrant Viaduct Basin on Hobson Wharf, the museum is Auckland's primary CBD-based waterfront visitor attraction.

We are looking for a full-time Front of House Team Leader to join our Visitor Services team.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and motivate a team of Museum Assistants, ensuring high standards of customer service.

  • Oversee day-to-day front-of-house operations including rostering, cash management, and visitor enquiries.

  • Resolve complex visitor enquiries and complaints in a professional and timely manner.

  • Support retail operations, merchandising, and cross-selling opportunities to enhance the visitor experience.

  • Work closely with other museum teams (Education, Tourism, Public Programmes, Vessels, Security) to ensure seamless operations.

  • Contribute to te ao Māori initiatives and foster a culturally responsive environment for staff and visitors.

  • This role is key to ensuring every visitor enjoys a welcoming, smooth, and memorable experience at the museum.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years’ experience in a front-of-house role in hospitality or visitor attractions, with line management experience preferred.

  • Strong leadership and team management skills, able to coach, motivate, and inspire staff.

  • Excellent customer service skills with the ability to handle complaints and complex enquiries.

  • Proactive, organised, and solutions-focused with strong decision-making skills.

  • Good working knowledge of MS Office and familiarity with booking systems; experience with rostering and payroll administration preferred.

  • A commitment to developing knowledge of te reo Māori, tikanga Māori, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi in the workplace.

Salary

Salary : $65,000k – 75,000k per annum, based on skillset, qualifications, and experience.
