The role
Would you like to be part of a team implementing actions on the ground in an organisation recognised for our expertise, innovation, science and leadership?
How about being part of a team responsible for implementing projects like the Manawatū River Accord, the Lake Horowhenua Accord and numerous other environmental initiatives?
All designed to improve water quality of rivers and lakes within the Manawatū/ Whanganui region?
This is a full-time, fixed term position until approximately June 2027 to cover an internal secondment.
You will mostly work within the Whangaehu and Rangitīkei Freshwater Management Units, and will be based from our Taihape office.
The role is focused on delivering programmes which result in water quality improvements and engaging the community in the process.
The role is part of a high performing team, who work closely with a wide range of stakeholders across the region.
In this largely field based position, you will work with landowners, project partners and key stakeholders to implement a range of projects designed to improve water quality and aquatic habitat.
Projects will include stream fencing, aquatic habitat restoration, support to community led projects, and fish barrier remediation.
The successful applicant will be empathetic towards the rural community; have excellent communication and relationship building skills and have the ability to delegate and deliver projects on the ground.
About you
To be successful in this position, a working knowledge of water quality issues and solutions, as well as practical skills around establishing riparian plantings, fence line placement, and fish passage solutions etc.
is desirable.
Candidates should hold a suitable Bachelor degree and have at least two years relevant experience or hold a relevant undergraduate certificate or diploma plus at least two years direct industry experience in a relevant environmental management discipline.
Ideally, you will have a proven track record of working with farmers, iwi, and community groups, have local knowledge and an ability to uphold the values of Te Tiriti O Waitangi.
Good interpersonal, communication and organisational skills are essential.
A full driver licence is necessary and experience with four wheel drive vehicles and the use of GIS is preferred.
