Job description

  • Full Time
  • Application Closes 26 Oct 2025
  • Manawatu - Manawatu
  • Engineering Technician
  • The role

As caretakers of our expansive region, Horizons Regional Council offers you a diverse and challenging environment to put your engineering skills to good use.

We have an outstanding opportunity for a motivated and committed permanent, full-time Engineering Officer or Cadet to join our River Management Team within the Catchment Operations Group, working across part of the beautiful Horizons region, based from our Kairanga Service Centre.

You will join a close-knit team responsible for river and drainage activities in our region.

This is an opportunity to have in-depth involvement in the many and varied projects focussed on keeping people and property safe from flooding.

As an Engineering Officer or Cadet you will be working closely with the Area Engineer on planning, designing, constructing and maintaining river control and drainage works in a cost-effective manner.

The role also monitors and reports on the condition of flood protection assets; and provides advice to landowners.

You will be required to develop good working relationships with iwi, other agencies, and our ratepayers – particularly those in the rural area.

    About you

We are looking for the right person to join our team.

Ideally you will have engineering experience with a passion to work outside, and be capable of writing technical reports, planning river protection and drainage works and managing scheme budgets.

We work over a large area, so holding a current full Class 1 driver’s license is essential.

A qualification in Civil Engineering, another relevant engineering or science qualification, or at least progress towards such a qualification is desirable.

However, we are also looking for someone with a proven ability to find practical engineering solutions to problems.

A working knowledge of Health and Safety, experience in contract supervision, and outstanding communication skills will also make you stand out above the crowd.

If you don’t have this level of experience or qualification yet, but you have the right attitude and ambitions, we’d still love to hear from you.

As part of recruiting for this role, we may take on an Engineering Cadet and help them develop as a future Engineering Officer.

If you can bring passion and enthusiasm to work then look no further, we have the training and career progression to provide you with a great opportunity!

    Why join us?

When you join us, you can look forward to a rewarding career full of opportunities to develop a positive and supportive work environment.

    We do this through:

  • Positive focus on employee health, wellness and wellbeing initiatives across the organisation including your birthday off, wellness day, life insurance for all permanent staff and 5 weeks leave after 2 years of service.
  • Flexible family friendly work environment.
  • Ongoing development and opportunities across the organisation to grow, specialise or diversify your skills.
