We are looking for a new recruit to join our Regulatory Compliance team at Bay of Plenty Regional Council, as a Compliance Officer, specialising in assessing and managing electronic and manual water abstraction data,


This is a permanent role, working 40 hours per week and it can be based in your choice of our offices; Tauranga, Whakatāne or Rotorua.

There will be plenty of variety in this role including:


  • Assess compliance on water abstraction data to ensure it meets consent conditions, including carrying out non-compliance actions where required.

  • Responsible for updating the automated compliance processor, including data entry.

  • Extract and quality check water use data and provide to internal and external customers.

  • Carry out site inspections to assess compliance with relevant on-site resource consent conditions.

  • Implementation of any new legislation affecting water takes e.g. Resource Management (Measurement and Reporting of Water Takes) Regulations 2020.

  • Advise on submission logistics and accuracy of Water Use Data via telemetry including liaising with 3rd party data providers.

  • Carry out general compliance duties as required.

    Along with a passion for your work, you will have;


  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental management with experience in data analysis/management OR a qualification in data analysis/management with relevant environmental management experience.
  • Proven ability to work confidently with large and complex datasets.
  • Intermediate to advanced Excel skills.
  • A keen eye for detail and an analytical thinker who enjoys piecing together data to form clear conclusions.

  • Motivated and disciplined to connect the dots to build a complete picture from different information sources.

  • Experience in enforcement action or regulatory compliance including direct and difficult conversations with consent holders.
  • Hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence.

  • The ability to build and maintain relationships with a wide range of stakeholders.
