    As New Zealand’s largest urban area, Aucklandaccounts for 33 per cent of the country’s population and 38 per cent of its GDPwhich, given its size, has a direct impact on the wellbeing of New Zealand.

    Driven by a vision to create a fit for purposeentity, Auckland Council was formed in November 2010 through the amalgamationof eight local government authorities, becoming the largest council inAustralasia.

    Its unique governancestructure includes a Governing Body that makes region-wide decisions and 21 localboards which make decisions at a local level.

    The council provides a singlevoice for Auckland on region-wide issues while allowing for local empowerment.

    While Auckland has had an enviable growthtrajectory, the recent impacts of COVID, Cyclone Gabrielle, and flooding haveplaced significant demands on the city’s infrastructure, transport, and housingneeds.

    At the same time, pressure on Auckland’s financial position isincreasing.

    The role of Chief Executive is pivotal tonavigating Auckland through its social, economic, and environmental challengesand opportunities.

    Integral to this will be working with the Mayor,elected members, council-controlled organisations (CCOs) and stakeholders toachieve the council’s strategic objectives; with a focus on cost containment,getting the city moving and making the most of the city’s harbour and naturalenvironment.

    The role is accountable for fostering a culture ofhigh-performing and engaged teams to deliver valued customer and communityservices and a significant capital investment programme.

    Anenergetic and inspirational leader is sought with a track record at ChiefExecutive level of leading large, diverse, and high-performing teams.

    Therole requires someone with a strong commercial orientation who is decisive andcourageous, with a collaborative and inclusive leadership style.

    Provenexperience in local government, complex multi-stakeholder and/or centralgovernment environments will be key, as will be the strategic agility to helpsteer an organisation through the ever-changing landscape that localauthorities operate in.

    Otherexperience and competencies sought, include:

  • A proven track record of successfully delivering significanttransformation programmes and exposure to leading large complex capitalprojects.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills and the ability toinitiate and maintain strategic relationships that assist in advancing thegoals of an organisation.
  • The political acuity to create a strong, productive relationshipbetween elected members and staff.
  • The ability to work in a high-profile role with strong public,community, and stakeholder interface.
  • Experience in effectively working with Māori and understandingtheir economic, environmental, cultural, and social aspirations.
  • A solid understanding of the New Zealand public sector, theconcept of public good and the democratic process.
