Job Summary

The Biomedical Engineer at ZOLL Medical is responsible for ensuring the safety, functionality, and performance of our medical devices by applying advanced engineering principles in maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, and repair.

This role focuses on supporting life-saving technology in critical care environments, assisting healthcare providers by maintaining high-quality standards in device operations and compliance.

The Biomedical Engineer will collaborate with cross-functional teams to provide technical expertise, customer support, and training, contributing to the overall mission of improving patient outcomes and advancing medical technology solutions.

Main Responsibilities

  1. Conduct Preventative Maintenance and Repairs on all ZOLL devices according to OEM specifications:
    1. Perform PM (in-house or field) according to device service manual.

    2. Perform Electrical Safety Testing according to AS/NZS 3551 standards.

    3. Perform troubleshooting and repair on all ZOLL devices.

  2. Arrange repair/replacement devices with ZOLL US:
    1. Log the device through the online Service Community Portal (SCP).

    2. Note the Service Repair (SR) number allocated via the Portal.

    3. Prepare the device to be shipped to the US once the SR number has been received.

    4. Consolidate the shipment to be sent to the US, typically every few weeks based on numbers.

    5. Label/tag each device with information required, providing SR numbers and list of items for US Customs.

    6. When necessary, send an electronic form to WH clarifying a requirement for a loan unit to be sent to the client.

    7. Conduct AT on all new replacement devices from the US.

    8. Conduct PM on all repaired devices returning from the US.

  3. Provide technical support on ZOLL devices:
    1. Provide advice on operational and technical enquiries received from internal and external stakeholders.

    2. Possibly source help/assistance from the US on technical enquiries.

    3. Assist Customer Service with client queries which may be either technical or stock.

    4. Troubleshoot with clients on AEDs.
    5. Troubleshoot with internal staff on returns that have no notification.

    6. Review pricing with the Operations Manager for Fire Devices and Ventilators.

    7. Provide manuals to enquiring customers and sales reps.

    8. Manage the Out of Box Failure (OBF) process for all devices:
      1. If the device is with the client, send out a loan (register in PANDA), and receive the faulty device.

      2. If device was OBF in the WH, receive an SO number, log in the SR number, and ship to the US.

      3. Update the Returns Register.

  4. Customer Service / Administration:
    1. Initiate customer communication re updates on PM or repairs.

    2. Provide customer with SR, Invoice (non-cash clients), and request to return loan item(s) if supplied.

    3. Arrange pick up if devices are under warranty and requiring PM or Repairs.

    4. Generate Service Quotation including parts and service.

    5. Confirm parts required with updated price list.

    6. Receive PO for service (via Customer Service) to create a customer file.

    7. Correspond with customers to identify/follow up with the repair quote.

    8. Once PM or Repair complete, enter PO in ORACLE, generate pick slip for WH to ship.

    9. Arrange freight/pick up when necessary.

    10. Respond to Customer requests for AT reports.

    11. Email correspondence with the US on returns (tracking).

  5. Comply and maintain ISO Standard requirements, OHS:
    1. Arrange annual calibration for testing equipment at ZOLL Aust.

    2. Maintain the spreadsheet.

    3. File the calibration certificates.

    4. Decontamination on all incoming devices for PM and Repairs.

    5. Maintain and update SOP and WI procedures.

  6. Conduct Onsite Biomedical Engineer Training:
    1. Facilitate BME training onsite following customer requests.

    2. Training to primarily consist of PM and basic repairs for X and R series devices.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.

    A master’s degree is a plus.

  2. Proven experience in biomedical engineering or a related field, with a focus on medical devices, healthcare systems, or clinical environments.

Skills and Competencies:

  1. Technical Proficiency: Strong understanding of biomedical engineering principles, medical device technology, and applicable regulatory standards.

  2. Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair medical equipment, with a methodical approach to problem-solving.

  3. Attention to Detail: High degree of accuracy and attention to detail in both engineering tasks and documentation.

  4. Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills to interact with healthcare professionals, explain technical issues, and document procedures clearly.

  5. Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.

  6. Interpersonal Skills: Strong collaboration skills to work effectively in a team setting with other engineers, clinical staff, and external vendors.

  7. Regulatory and Compliance Knowledge: Familiarity with healthcare regulations, safety protocols, and quality assurance standards (e.g., FDA, ISO 13485).

Additional Requirements:

  1. Ability to work in fast-paced clinical environments and adapt to changing priorities.

  2. Proficiency with CAD software, simulation tools, and other engineering software is a plus.

  3. Willingness to continue professional development and stay updated on new technologies and industry trends.

QA and Safety: Commitment to the quality, environment, health, and safety and proactively reporting any risks and issues to your manager or Supervisor.

Carrying out the roles and responsibilities as detailed in the quality, environment, health and safety policies and procedures.

Understanding the company mission, vision, policies, objectives and other requirements of the quality, environment, health, and safety management system.

Your involvement is essential in identifying potential hazards that can be eliminated, or minimized, before injuries occur.

Participating in trainings, inductions, and Toolbox Talks.
