GHD Design is seeking a skilled and motivated Assistant Director of Architecture to join our dynamic Wellington Studio.

This is a great opportunity to apply your strategic and technical skills across a diverse range of projects, contributing to high-quality outcomes and collaborating with a team passionate about design and excellence.


The Assistant Director of Architecture is a dual-role position that encompasses leading Architecture projects’ creative and technical aspects while providing support functions to the Studio Director.

This role requires a balance of design leadership, project and client management, and supporting business growth to ensure the efficient operation of the Architecture team and successful delivery of high-quality design solutions.

This diverse and exciting position will see you involved in:

  • Providing strategic leadership and design direction across multidisciplinary and architecture projects
  • Leading architectural design for major infrastructure and development projects for government and civic clients
  • Developing design excellence across the architecture portfolio, including ensuring the technical quality of deliverables.
  • Serving as project lead, leading the development of architectural design from masterplans right through to construction.
  • Fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture, mentoring staff, whilst building and maintaining strong relationships with clients, stakeholders, and industry partners.
  • Identifying market opportunities and leading the preparation of bids and proposals
  • Staying current with industry trends, technologies, and best practices.
  • What would you bring to the team?

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in Architecture, with at least 15+ years proven experience including leadership roles on complex, large scale projects
  • Experience in Revit and MasterSpec 
  • A good understanding of local compliance and consenting processes
  • Strong market connections in New Zealand – particularly in government and civic sectors
  • Demonstrated success in team leadership, project delivery, and client relationship management, as well as strong technical detailing and architectural documentation experience
  • A strategic mindset, strong communication skills, and a passion for design excellence
  • A commitment to mentoring, developing high-performing teams, and continuously improving how we work.
