## Mō tēnei tūranga mahi | About this role**Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine**Health New Zealand I Te Whatu Ora is firmly grounded in the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi and is committed to building a health system that serves all New Zealanders.Te Whatu Ora Waitematā provides healthcare to the northern and western regions of Auckland, and is the largest district health board in New Zealand by population.

Our primary site is North Shore Hospital, in the beautiful seaside suburb of Takapuna, less than 10km from the city centre.

We are a major metropolitan teaching hospital and an ANZCA-credentialled anaesthesia department, with 28 operating rooms over two campuses.

In addition to our clinical, academic, and teaching credentials, our department is known for its welcoming and inclusive culture.**About the role:**We provide anaesthesia services for a broad range of surgical specialties including colorectal, upper GI, liver resections, breast, complex endocrine, bariatric, adult and paediatric ENT, urology, obstetrics & gynaecology, paediatric dental, robotic surgery, and orthopaedic procedures.We are seeking suitable candidates for our Anaesthesia Fellow posts for 12 months, commencing either the first week of February 2026 or August 2026.

Roles may be split into 6 months each.

Expressions of interest for February/August 2027 are welcome.

We offer the following fellowships:* Regional Anaesthesia (available Feb 2026)* Upper GI Anaesthesia (available Feb 2026)* Pain Medicine (available Feb 2026)* Obstetric Anaesthesia (available Feb 2027)* Perioperative Medicine (available Feb 2026)* Medical Education in Anaesthesia (available Aug 2026)* Research in Anaesthesia (available Feb 2026)* General - with self-directed subspecialty interest areas (available Feb 2026)The aims & objectives of each fellowship are included in the detailed position description available at Our General fellowship can accommodate a range of interest areas, including Robotic Surgery, Sustainability in Anaesthesia, Healthcare Informatics, or a self-directed clinical subspecialty.The roles are designed to give fellows focused experience in a specific sub-specialty, within a broader general clinical experience.

Fellows have supervised lists in their sub-specialty, as well as independent lists.

They have experience 'running the floor' with support, including triaging emergency cases and overseeing anaesthesia trainees.

A portfolio project forms part of each role, and dedicated time is rostered to support this.

We provide a broad range of clinical and non-clinical opportunities, and the support and expertise to make the most of them.

Fellows develop both clinically and professionally, towards confident independent practice.**About the****team:**Our fellows work 4 weekdays, with one weekday as a 'rostered day off'.

Within their 4 days, they have a half-day of rostered admin time towards non-clinical responsibilities.

In addition, they share evenings, weekends and public holiday shifts between those on the fellow roster.

There are no routine night shifts.

The contract includes 6 weeks annual leave and 2 weeks education leave (pro rata), and a generous stipend towards continuing professional development expenses.**About you:**Eligibility for registration with the Medical Council of New Zealand is essential.

MCNZ has a self assessment tool to test for eligibility: The roles are suitable for both final-phase trainees and those recently completed training.

All applicants must have a minimum of four years training in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care.

Those who are ANZCA trainees must be eligible to commence PFY prior to or on the commencement of the contract.

These are ANZCA accredited PF training positions.Positions are preferably for 12 months, however other terms and start dates may be possible.When applying, please include an updated CV with a cover letter.

The cover letter should include a preference ranking for the fellowships on offer along with reasons for your preferences.

Please provide contact details of three referees in your CV.
